Quick Count - 1v1 Dot Cloud Counting Duel

Quick Count on FlagDuel is a free 1v1 attention duel: a cloud of dots is shown for 0.8 seconds and then four possible counts appear, the cloud opens at 5 dots and grows by one every 2 correct answers up to a cap of 24, a wrong count locks your board for 0.7 seconds, and the first player to give 8 correct counts wins the round.

Dots appear, scattered without pattern, and 0.8 seconds later they are gone. Then four numbers, one of which is how many there were.

Up to about four dots the answer simply arrives - no counting, no effort, just a number that is there when you look. That ceiling has a name, subitizing, and this duel is built around going past it. The cloud opens at 5 dots and grows by one for every 2 correct answers you give, so it walks steadily out of the range where seeing works and into the range where you have to do something cleverer.

That something is grouping. Nobody counts nine dots in eight tenths of a second, but plenty of people can see a three, a three and another three. Eight correct counts takes the round; a wrong one locks your board for 0.7 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I see four dots at a glance but not nine?

Because up to about four items the number arrives without counting - psychologists call it subitizing, and it is instant and effortless. Past that ceiling the brain switches to counting or estimating, which is slower and far less certain, and 0.8 seconds is not much room for either.

What is the best way to read a cloud in 0.8 seconds?

Break it into groups your eye can subitize. Two threes and a two is nine, and you will get there long before you could count nine dots one by one. Good players stop trying to see a number and start seeing a shape made of small clusters.

How large do the clouds actually get in one round?

In a clean run to eight answers you will see roughly 5 up to 8 or 9 dots, because the cloud only grows on every second correct answer. The cap of 24 is there for long, hard-fought duels where the score climbs slowly - most rounds never come close to it.

Should I answer immediately or hold the picture for a beat?

Hold it, but only for a beat. The afterimage of the cloud survives long enough to be grouped after it has gone, which is exactly what the extra moment is for. Waiting longer than that gains nothing: the picture fades fast and the four options are not going to get any easier.
