More or Less - 1v1 Bigger Cloud Judgement Race

More or Less on FlagDuel is a free 1v1 speed duel: two clouds of dots appear side by side and you tap whichever one holds more, the gap between them opens at around 60 percent and tightens toward 15 percent as your score climbs, a wrong cloud locks you for 0.65 seconds, and the first player to make 10 correct calls wins the round.

Two clouds of dots, side by side. Tap the one with more in it. There is no time to count and no need to - the answer is supposed to arrive as an impression rather than a total.

That impression has a name. The approximate number sense is the fast, rough quantity judgement that works without counting, and it is precise in the way a glance is precise: excellent when one pile is obviously bigger, increasingly vague as the two get closer. This duel walks you straight down that slope. The gap opens at around 60 percent, where the answer is obvious, and tightens toward 15 percent, where two clouds genuinely look the same and you are answering on a feeling you cannot justify.

A wrong cloud locks you for 0.65 seconds. Ten correct calls takes the round, and the last few are the interesting ones.

Frequently asked questions

Am I supposed to count the dots?

No, and you will lose if you try. This is a test of the approximate number sense - the fast, rough judgement of quantity that works without counting and that humans share with a great many other animals. Counting is accurate and hopelessly slow; the whole duel lives on the other system.

Why does a 15 percent gap feel like a coin toss?

Because the approximate system gets vaguer as quantities grow. It judges ratios rather than differences, so telling 20 from 30 is easy while telling 40 from 46 is genuinely near the edge of what the sense can resolve. At the tight end of this duel you are working right at that limit.

Does the area the dots cover fool me?

Often. A loose, sprawling cloud looks like more than a tightly packed one holding the same number, because size and density leak into a judgement that is supposed to be about count alone. When two clouds look close, trust the one that feels busier rather than the one that looks wider.

Can this kind of number sense be trained?

It sharpens with use, though not dramatically - what improves fastest is your willingness to answer at a glance rather than the resolution of the sense itself. Most of the gain in a duel like this comes from no longer hesitating over gaps you were already reading correctly.
