Face in Crowd - 1v1 Odd Expression Hunting Duel

Face in Crowd on FlagDuel is a free 1v1 attention duel: a 6x6 crowd holds exactly one smile among 35 frowns and a tap on it scores, every third find flips the rule so the crowd becomes one frown among smiles, a wrong face locks your board for 0.7 seconds, and the first player to 9 finds wins the round.

Thirty-six faces, arranged in a square, and one of them is not like the others. It is smiling and the rest are not, and your job is to put a finger on it before the other side does.

Then the rule turns over. Every third find inverts the crowd - one frown hiding among 35 smiles - and the search you had just got good at becomes the search you have to unlearn. The board looks almost identical either way, which is precisely the problem: the eyes keep hunting for whatever scored last time.

A wrong face locks your board for 0.7 seconds, long enough to lose a find you had already earned. Nine finds takes the round, with the rule flipping at three, six and nine.

Frequently asked questions

What is the face-in-the-crowd effect?

It is the finding that an odd expression in a field of faces is picked out faster than the size of the field suggests, and that the two directions are not equal - an unfriendly face tends to be spotted among calm ones more readily than the reverse. This duel puts both directions on the same board and lets you feel the difference.

Is one frown among smiles harder than one smile among frowns?

For most people, yes, which is the reason the rule flips at all. Hunting the unusual face in a friendly crowd tends to run slower and produce more wrong taps than the search that goes the other way, and the boards just after a flip are where duels are usually decided.

Which find flips the crowd around?

Every third one. Finds three, six and nine each turn the rule over, so a round to 9 contains three flips - and since the ninth find is also the winning one, the last flip lands exactly where nobody wants to be re-reading the board.

Where in a 6x6 crowd do people look last?

The bottom two rows and the far right column. Eyes start high and left out of reading habit and sweep inwards, so the corners furthest from that path hold an odd face for an extra beat. Knowing that is worth more than scanning faster.
